Field, Eugene. (1850 - 1895). "The Symbol and the Saint" - SIGNED COPY OF FIELD'S CHRISTMAS TALE
Facsimile manuscript copy of Field's Christmas story The Symbol and the Saint, apparently an offprint prepared for the author, hole-punched and bound on the right with pink ribbon, with a signed dedication in Field's hand to Mrs. Irving Way, dated August 22, 1895, a few months before Field's untimely death at the age of 45. Mrs. Way, the wife of Field's friend and fellow book collector W. Irving Way, did illuminations and illustrations for several of Field's books. The story, a fable that explains the origin of Santa Claus, is dated 1886 and was first published in A Little Book of Profitable Tales in 1889. Eleven sheets. Slight toning around the edges, a previous autograph signed inscription from the author canceled out before the inscription to Mrs. Way, otherwise in fine condition; 14 x 17.5 cm. Read More...
Food & Art Providence kitchen apron signed in silver pen on the front by legendary chefs Jacques Pepin, Graham Kerr, Ming Tsai and Julia Child, the famous American cook, author, spy, and television personality, who introduced French cuisine and cooking techniques to the American mainstream, through her many cookbooks and television programs, including the series The French Chef, which premiered in 1963.
Vintage 1950 packaging for a set of his-and-hers "Guys and Dolls" sport shirts, a souvenir from the immortal Frank Loesser Broadway show. Beaver Shirt Manufacturers Co., New York. The inside of the box reads: "For the Guy and his Doll... Here's something... Companion sportshirts designed for two." Some soiling and a small water stain; box intact with no rips or tears. 15 1/2" X 9 1/2" X 4".
Hallmark "Merry Christmas / Happy New Year" card, signed "Roland Hayes / Christmas 1956" in black ink from the lyric tenor considered the first African American male concert artist to receive wide international acclaim as well as at home. In fine condition. 4 x 4 inches.
An graphically wonderful autograph Christmas card from the German composer, violist, and conductor, who designed the illustration side himself. On the verso, he apologizes for not being able to participate in the Kiel music festival of 1953. Dated New Haven, December 12, 1952. Translated from the German, in part: "I'm glad that you like 'Harmony' and had success with it. -- In June we will finally be on our way from here to Europe, so I won't be able to come to the Kiel Festival (anyway, I'm a bad sailor and sprats don't agree with me)..." The recipient was the then Generalmusikdirektor of Kiel, Georg C. Winkler. Hindemith's address appears to have been added in pencil by his wife Gertrud. Hole-punched along the left edge, else fine. 14 x 10.5 cm.
Printed Christmas card from the Italian composer and librettist, featuring a glossy photograph of Menotti with his family to the front of the card, the inside bearing an entirely PRINTED inscription and signature by Menotti. 12cm by 15.5cm (8 3/4" by 6"). Part of a collection of autographs of composers obtained by Peter L Moldon (1937 - 2014), this example sent to him in 1994 and sold with the original envelope, which carries Menotti's Scottish address in East Lothian to the reverse.
Early Japanese porcelain bird-whistle in the shape of a reclining boy, dating from ca. 1700. Painted and decorated in vibrant colors of enamel and a transparent glaze. The treatment of the porcelain body is still in a rather experimental phase and shows some body shrinking under the glaze. Possibly to be ascribed to the early Arita (Kakiemon type) kilns in Edo period Japan. 2.36 inches (6 cm) long.
Original press photograph of the great civil rights leader together with Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh. Original press clipping on the verso reads: "Martin Luther King Jr., left, appearing Monday in a news conference with Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk from Viet Nam, suggests a halt in bombings in Viet Nam. King also said there is no direct parallel between Buddhists who put themselves to death by fire and Americans who die in civil rights causes. The monk said the Buddhists 'want a non-Communist Viet Nam.'" Stamped on the verso: June 1, 1966. 8.25 x 7 inches (20.7 x 17.5 cm).

1948 Christmas card from the important American pianist and philanthropist, wife of composer Edward MacDowell and founder of the MacDowell Colony for artists in Peterborough, New Hampshire. On a small card printed with a stanza of poetry and MacDowell's name, she has signed with "affectionate good wishes." With the original envelope addressed to a Dr. and Mrs. Harrington in Peterborough and postmarked December 18, 1948 in California. In very fine condition. 4.25 x 3.5 inches (10.8 x 9 cm) folded.
AMQS on an off-white page measuring 9 x 6.5 cm. The composer has penned a short quotation of three notes marked "Lento," and with the text "Les Larmes" from Acte 3 of "Werther," signing "Massenet / Paris / 95." Significant block of toning, but otherwise fine.
Massenet's Werther is thrilling, tuneful, and one of the saddest operas ever composed — it ends with a suicide on Christmas Eve. It was first performed in Vienna, on February 16, 1892.

With the hand-addressed envelope postmarked Dec 27, 1964. In English, in full: "Dear Friends, Happy New Year! Thanks for your nice publicity with this nice picture. We tried without success to phone you today. I suppose the Calif. flood has something to do with it. We had a beautiful time in Salt Lake. The recordings of Pacem in Terris and of Honegger's Judith (Madeleine narrator) went superbly. I work hard, as I am well now, and finished the 2nd Act of my 'last' opera. Much love to the Critic. A collection of three decorative watercolors of musical notation, circa 1870's, each depicting several staves of music in pen & ink within decorative border of various vignettes and motifs, including flowers, landscape vistas, figures, birds, architectural details, etc., each intricately cut out in outline, mounted on blue paper. The three meticulously copied pieces of music appear to be short Viennese waltzes for piano. Three charming pieces evoking the spirit of late-nineteenth-century Vienna. Some light wear to the blue mounts, but overall in very fine condition. Each approx. 11 x 8 inches (27.5 x 20.5 cm), mounted to 14.25 x 10.75 inches (36.3 x 27.3 cm).

A printed greeting from the important German pianist, reproduced in her handwriting on a small card with a small halftone photograph. Two sayings about music are printed on the left, one attributed to Beethoven, and Ney's signature is printed on the right below her picture. Translated from the German: "The purpose of music is that God should not be forgotten. Beethoven: I recognize only one sign of man's superiority: goodness." Score to the important Danish composer's popular work for solo piano, signed and inscribed by the composer on the title page to the German-Dutch composer and pianist Julius Röntgen. An original envelope in the hand of the English social reformer and founder of modern nursing, addressed to her cousin, Miss Nicholson, at Waverley Abbey, Farnham. The envelope is postmarked 1842, when Nightingale was twenty-two, newly received into London society, and had not yet declared her intention to become a nurse. The recipient is probably Marianne Nicholson, Florence's cousin and close friend and the sister of Henry Nicholson, who proposed to Florence in 1843 but was rejected. Original 1872 broadside of the Boston & Albany Railroad, announcing an extra train from Brookline to Boston for the Handel & Haydn Society's performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah. The boldly printed text announces that "For the accommodation of persons who desire to hear 'Elijah,' a train will leave Brookline at 6:45 pm on Sunday next, and return at 10:05 pm, or twenty minutes after the close of the Oratorio."
