102. François, Samson. (1924–1970).
Signed Recital Program

Elusive signed program from a Roubaix performance six months before the tragically early death of the great French pianist and composer. A student of Mascagni (!) as a child, he later studied with Cortot, Long and Boulanger. His extravagant lifestyle, good looks, and passionate but highly disciplined playing, gave him a cult status as a pianist but he had a heart attack on the concert stage in 1968 and died only two years later. 21 x 27 cm, 4 pp. Heavy light blue paper stock, creased, the added notation in an unknown hand "mort le 23 Octobre 1970," else fine.

Original Stipple Engraving

Original 18th-Century stipple engraving of the celebrated contralto. Engraved by Luigi Rados after the portrait by Francesco Scotto. Her name printed with the title "Prima Cantante al servizio di S. M. Re d’Italia." 14.5 x 21.5 cm. Fine.


Gafforini, famous for her portrayal of comic roles, flourished in Italy, Spain and Portugal between 1790 and 1812. Her last recorded performance was at La Scala in 1815. She is celebrated in Stendhal's "Lives of Haydn, Mozart and Metastasio."

Two Autograph Letters to David Blum

Pair of autograph letters, each 1p, from the beloved Austrian-born American-Jewish violinist and music teacher. They are addressed to David Blum, the symphonic conductor and writer on classical music. The first is undated and concerns Arthur Schnabel, about whom Blum had written an article ("One can sense how much you personally liked him and what he meant to you. May I say, that I agree with you 100 per cent and that his pianism speaks to us.") The second, dated 1995, thanks Blum for a gift of his Haydn Symphony recordings ("They are absolutely delightful and I love them. Signed by the photographer on the verso in small handwriting lower left "photograph by Carl Van Vechten/ March 28, 1933-XII c: 4". With several lower right corners chipped, many corners bent or creased (never affecting the printed music), some gatherings loose from the binding, "Rep Fra" red stamps to the margins of a number of pages, binding heavily rubbed/chipped/cracked and with losses to lower spine.
