Attractively bound in brown half-morocco by Henry Sotheran Ltd., with light brown cloth, five raised bands to spine with gilt title and decorations and with previous owner's gilt initials to one corner. Two rare intimate photographs of the great composer/lyricist seated at the piano with the important playwright/director. 9.5 x 12 and 20.5 x 25.5 cm. Light chipping at edges, else fine.


From around the period of their only collaboration, on "Jubilee" which opened at The Broadway Theatre on October 12, 1935 and ran for 169 performances. It starred Mary Boand as Queen of England and the 14-year old Montgomery Clift as Prince Peter.

Original Photograph at Rachmaninoff's Grave

Original 9 x 7 inch 1958 wire photograph of the American pianist who won worldwide recognition that year after winning the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, at the height of the Cold War. He is shown planting "a lilac bush he brought back from the Soviet Union beside the grave of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff at Kensico Cemetery here May 31st. Cliburn placed soil from the grave into a container and gave it to a representative of the Soviet Embassy for shipment to Russia." In fine condition, an unusual and moving photograph.

He was regarded as one of the most influential and versatile musicians of the period. A pianist who toured with violinist, H.W. Ernst, he was an intimate of David, Hiller, Schumann and Mendelssohn. One of the most important composition teachers of the period, his students included Bruch, Grieg, Reznicek, Sinding, Sullivan, Svedsen and Weingartner!
