Autograph Letter Signed to Pearl Bailey

Ebullient ALS from the American actor and producer to actress and singer Pearl Bailey, thanking her for sending him a copy of her recent memoir, The Raw Pearl.  New York, 30 September 1968;  3 pp. on personal stationary.  Fairbanks, best known for his roles in Gunga Din, The Prisoner of Zenda, and Sinbad the Sailor, writes, in part, "Pearl Dear, / I just returned to town last night—and what did my wondering eyes behold but the copy of your book which my secretary had left in the center of my desk so it would be the first thing I noticed on my homecoming! / I'm longing to read it and will start as soon as I can.  But it is the inscription at the front which I prize most!  Adlai Stevenson once said something to the effect that flattery is fine as long as you don't chew on it.  Well, I'm determined to chew on that most flattering inscription till the end of my days! Oh, I'm so proud! And so grateful! And so touched! And, even more than ever, / Yours ever, / Douglas."  The letter also includes a lengthy postscript and four empty photo corners to the lower portion of the second leaf.  Expected mailing folds, else in very fine condition. 7.5 x 10.75 inches (19 x 27.3 cm.).

Original atmospheric ca. 1919 Bangs of New York portrait photograph of the influential film director, with the raised blindstamp of the photography studio at right.  There are two clippings mounted to verso, including a press blurb that reads "D. W. Griffith / Prominent screen producer who will offer the first repertory season in the history of motion pictures, opening at the George M. Cohan Theatre May 12, with Broken Blossoms." Stamp to verso indicates the photograph was part of the collection at the New York World, a newspaper in publication from 1860 until 1931.  Rippling and wear to edges, crease to upper left corner, overall in very good condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).
