"Manon" - The composer's working copy with manuscript revisions from an Italian performance

Paris: G. Hartmann. Opera-comica in quattro atti e sei quadri. Italian Piano-vocal score. 391 pp. Engraved throughout. [PN] G.H. 1528. Small 4to. 184 pp. [the remainder lacking]. The cover with an affixed title label, the ink stamp of G. Hartmann and inscribed and signed by the composer: "partition avec suppression des roles de Poussette, de Javotte et de Rosette, coupures etc.etc. pour l'Italie. J. Massenet. Paris juillet 1891." The cuts marked throughout in blue pencil, generally followed with autograph music insertions or revisions in red ink in the hand of the composer, sometimes on pasted or pinned in slips, including scenic indications and notes ("see the vocalises sung by Miss Sibyl Sanderson" etc). In fragile condition, disbound, the cover with extensive chipping and tears repaired, nevertheless a remarkable copy prepared for an important performance in Italy. Read More...

Sachse.  Slightly browned and areas of damp-staining, set in an (easily-removable) grey paper passepartout.

A fine example of this celebrated portrait of the violinist-composer in profile, cast bronze with warm brown patina, 6 in. diameter, signed and dated 1834 at lower center, inscribed with sitter's name to left, and with foundry mark "Eck et Durand" to verso, stamped with the number 357 to the upper edge, with a later metal hanging loop soldered to verso, Christie's label affixed to verso. With remarkable provenance from the collection of Alfred Cortot, one of the great pianists of all time, as well as an important collector of antiquarian music and historical music memorabilia. Silver-plated cigar case, with registration mark of 1891, 2.5 x 12.5 cm, together with an autograph letter of provenance on black-bordered mourning stationery from the wife of the March King, to Rev. Robert C. Gillespie of Limestone, TN. 1 page, October 12, 1932. Port Washington, L.I., reading in full, "Some time ago you wrote asking for a souvenir of the late Mr. John Philip Sousa and I am sending you his cigar case which he carried. Yours very Sincerely, Jane van M. Sousa (Mrs. John Philip Sousa)". Letter in fine condition, sold together with the original postmarked  transmissal envelope  (Oct. 15, 1932) and also with a second postmarked envelope (Mar 30, 1932) containing a black-bordered mourning card with printed text "Mrs. John Philip Sousa and the members of her family will remember with grateful appreciation your kind expression of sympathy." EML Poly-Box remote analog synthesizer controller from the personal collection of Frank Zappa. The controller features a miniature keyboard, three input jacks for “Out,” “In,” and “Gate,” switches and knobs for “Voicing,” “Pitch Control,” and “Keyboard Memory,” and red light bulbs for 13 different octaves.  Back panel bears an on/off toggle switch (marked “940”), an ICA Ltd. label numbered “128,” and a “Poly-Box, Electronic Music Laboratories” stamp.  In very good to fine, untested condition, with expected signs of use, and a missing upper section of left wooden frame.  Weighs approximately 14 lbs and measures 18.5 x 12.25 x 5.25 inches (47 x 31.1 x 13.3 cm.). Collection of three original orchestral score booklets used in the production of Frank Zappa’s 1971 surreal musical film 200 Motels, with the front covers respectively gilt-titled as follows: “200 Motels, Book I,” “200 Motels, Book II,” and “Shove It Right In,” each with Zappa’s name printed in the lower right corner. These spiral-bound score booklets contain reproductions of Zappa’s original handwritten arrangements, with many pages also bearing handwritten corrections by Zappa. 'Think It Over' Autograph Musical Manuscript

Original manuscript orchestral arrangement by Frank Zappa for the song ‘Think It Over,’ originally composed as part of the unrealized two-act Broadway stage production Hunchentoot, a science-fiction musical conceived by Zappa while he recovered from his near-fatal attack at the Rainbow Theatre in December 1971.  The tape-bound manuscript is comprised of 14 music-ruled sheets meticulously composed in pencil by Zappa, who incorporates his signature on the cover sheet: “‘Think It Over,’ Part I, Frank Zappa, Concert Pitch Score, Don’t Shoot This Page.”   12.25 x 15 inches (31.75 x 38.1 cm.). Rare ALS from the Belgian violinist, a child prodigy who became internationally known as a teenager and whose virtuosity and pure lyrical expression earned her a place among the top international female performers, to Romanian Colonel George Magherescu.  September 25, 1982; 2 pp. Seiguelay, August 27, 1933.  The letter, written in Romanian, is mostly untranslated but begins rather strikingly: "I received everything you could tell me about my father's death. / Thank you so much for taking such an objective attitude. / I have nothing to do with Sna.
