New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1925. First. 8vo. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. First printing, with the points present. Green cloth binding, supplied with a facsimile dust jacket. A very good to near fine copy. Very minor edge wear, small blemish to the cloth at mid spine. A bit of foxing to the outer text block (pp. 1-2; 213-18), contents otherwise generally crisp and clean. A very attractive example of Fitzgerald's masterpiece - the great American novel.

Gradwohl who furnished the interesting idea on which the plot is founded. / Yours, Erle Stanley Gardner / Christmas 1952” to the front endpaper;  Dr. Gradwohl, one of the early pioneers in the field of forensics, has inscribed "To Bernie and Viv Schram, / With my warmest Xmas greetings / R. Four original playbills signed by the great American playwright, including programs from the original 1951 production and 1966 revival of The Rose Tattoo, the 1974 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and the original 1980 production of Clothes for a Summer Hotel. The programs from 1951's Rose Tattoo and Clothes for a Summer Hotel are signed boldly on the cover by Williams, the 1951 program with an additional Williams signature on the title page. The programs from 1966's Rose Tattoo and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are signed on the title page, with the latter also signed by the play's star, Elizabeth Ashley. Read More...

Signed Photograph

Oblong 1957 photograph of the renowned American architect and the renowned American poet, both ex-Chicagoans and old friends, boldly signed by each in the lower blank margin. Original photograph by Art Siegel, 7 1/2 x 9". On verso, notations record the place each autograph was obtained: Sandburg's in Flat Rock, North Carolina and Wright's in Scottsdale, Arizona (January, 1958). A few areas of surface loss to the image which have been in-painted with dye, and an area of evident creasing or tearing repaired by a clumsily affixed small adhesive, light paper skinning on the lower edge, none of these faults affecting either of the signatures. Folio (14 x 19 inch; 35 x 49 cm), spiral bound, plain boards; covers detached, generally sound internally. Together with an elaborate painted calligraphic presentation broadside (14 x 21 inch; 36 x 54 cm) of the Symphony to Albert Einstein by Sol Nodel (1951), "Symphony No. 2 'David' dedicated to Albert Einstein For his inspiration to the Jewish people and to all humanity by the composer Menahem Avidom and presented by the American Fund for Israel Institutions on the occasion of the American tour of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, January, February, March 1951," additionally inscribed by the composer in black ink upper left, "To the greatest man in our generation / Prof. A. Einstein / humbly / From the Composer / M. Avidom / Princeton 10/1/51." Together with an original 8 x 8 inch original photograph of the presentation to Einstein and a photocopy of a 1986 letter from Louise F. Sayen later presenting the score and broadside to a Mr. Benamy, noting that "Miss Margot Einstein made this gift to you in gratitude for your thoughtful help in arranging for the distribution of her father's library.  It gave her great comfort that you were the designated representative for the Friends of Hebrew University in Jerusalem." Medical side view X-ray of Albert Einstein's skull, taken in 1945 by Dr. Gustav Bucky. In very fine condition. Printed on standard X-ray photograph stock, 10 x 12 inches (25.2 x 30.2 cm).  We have been unable to positively identify when this print was made, but it is not one that either Bucky or Einstein owned and certainly dates from well after the original imaging.  Another example of the present X-ray together with a peripheral view (both also later printings), sold on December 2010 at auction for $38,750.00.  Read More...

"It Preaches, Tells Funny Stories, Sings, Plays All Kinds of Music"- Talking Machine Broadside

Printed letterpress broadside extolling the virtues of the newly invented "talking machine," Thomas Edison's phonograph, and advertising a live demonstration of the machine on November 28th of an unspecified year, ca. 1880s–1890s.  "The talking machine is one of the most wonderful inventions of the age, and is a source of wonder and delight to young and old," the copy reads.  "It preaches, tells funny stories, sings, plays all kinds of music and talks talk.  A strictly high-class entertainment."  While the majority of the broadside is printed, the specifics of the demonstration are handwritten in a combination of pen and crayon.  Occasional tearing, including a significant 9-inch diagonal tear from the left edge that has been reinforced on the verso with scotch tape, but otherwise in good condition.  12 x 16 inches (30.5 x 40.6 cm.). "Let us beat swords into ploughshares"

Soviet-era aluminum metal sculpture, 9 3/4 x 7 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.  Signed and inscribed in cyrillic, representing the figure of a man holding a hammer in one hand and, in the other, a sword which he is making into a plough share, symbolizing man's desire to put an end to war and convert the means of destruction into creative tools for the benefit of all mankind. A large bronze of this subject by Vuchetich is preserved at the United Nations, New York. Scattered staining and marks to metal, else very good.  Read More...
