Original black-and-white photograph depicting a bearded Ives seated, holding his cane and leaning forward with a direct and intense gaze. This iconic image was taken by American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith and is stamped on the verso and titled by hand. Doubleweight silver print, 16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm.). 19th century instrument made in the tradition of Pennsylvania redware, with an incised inscription on the side reading "Flöte blaser" ("Flute player"), and featuring a charming drawing of a man playing the flute etched into the glaze. An unusual autograph signed quotation from the Bohemian conductor, Mahler's successor at the New York Philharmonic Society (1911-1923), who writes that "Sergei Rachmaninoff is a giant among the composers of our time. He belongs to the class of Debussy, Richard Strauss and Ravel." Boldly signed and inscribed and dated August 4th, 1919.  7.8 x 5.5 inches [20 x 14 cm]. Typed letter, signed by Richard Rodgers, on his personal 488 Madison Avenue office stationery, to American novelist, friend, and neighbor, Edna Ferber, concerning his play, The Sound of Music: "Your heartwarming/note about THE SOUND OF MUSIC did exactly/that--it warmed my heart. I think and/hope that there's a large public for some-/thing essentially decent in the musical/theatre and you, as well as other people, seem to think that that is what this play/is.
