"Tehillim" - Pre-Publication Annotated Score Signed to NY PHIL Assistant Conductor

[Place of publication not identified] : [The Author]. 1981. Signed score of the influential composer's important 1981 composition, the first of his works to reflect Reich's Jewish heritage, and including Tehillim Parts I - IV.  Paper covers with title, author and "Commissioned by South German Radio, Stuttgart / West German Radio, Cologne / Rothko Chapel, Houston," spiral-bound facsimile rehearsal copy dated 1981 and prepared by the composer himself in advance of the official publication of the same year by Hendon Music.  Title/Cover (vb); Instrumentation (vb); (1) - 165 pp [typeset score Tehillim Part I and II]; 1 - 106 pp [manuscript facsimile Tehillim Part III - IV]. Signed and inscribed at the foot of the Instrumentation page in pencil to the conductor Larry Newland and dated 12/29/81, during which time Newland was the Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic.  The composer has also added in ink "C[opyright] Steve Reich 1981" to the foot of the first page of music and has extensively amended in ink the printed Instrumentation page, including the additions of instruments "Pic, Flute, Marimba, Vibraphone," specifying number of Strings players "(12-10-8-6-4)," bracketing the percussion instruments and noting "6 players" and amending various instrumentation listings with "*" denoting "* = Amplified."   In very fine condition.  Read More...

Rare autograph manuscript in French, unsigned, no date, penned boldly by Jean-Jacques Rousseau on an off-white sheet measuring 7.5 x 10 inches (19 x 25.5 cm). An anecdote after the history by Nicolaus of Damascus about Irene, mother of Ptolemy, the page derives from Rousseau's unpublished work relating to the history of women which he prepared between 1746-51 for his benefactress Louise Marie Madeleine Dupin, for whose son he was the secretary and teacher from 1745-51.  Read More...

ALS from one of the most influential pianists of the 19th century to the French violinist and composer Jules Armingaud, asking if he would join her for an upcoming concert performance during her third concert stay in Paris.  2 pp.  Paris, 1862.  She writes in part, translated from the French, "Saying a thousand thanks for the great pleasure you gave me at my concert, playing the Sonata with which you enchanted everyone, I once again call upon your kindness, for my last concert on Tuesday, 8 April.  Would you like to play my husband's quartet with me?  And speak on my behalf with your colleges, MM. Original 1971 poster designed by Miró for a pair of Domaine Musical performances at the Theatre de la Ville in Paris.  Divided into two performances, each set that evening featured three pieces by Edgard Varèse and three pieces by Iannis Xenakis.  The first performance, at 6:30, included Octandre, Densité 21.5, and Poème électronique by Varèse alongside Herma, Diamorphoses, and ST/10 by Xenakis.  The second set at 8:30 included EcuatorialPoème électronique, and Déserts from Varèse, followed by the French premiere of Xenakis' Aroura, the premiere of a 4-track version of Hibiki Hana Ma, and Eonta.  Creasing to the lower margin, very slight foxing throughout; overall fine condition.  19.75 x 9 inches (50 x 23 cm.). Signed postcard photograph of the important Russian violinist, the dedicatee of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D and the founder of the Brodsky Quartet. He is shown in a profile portrait and has signed boldly at the foot. Signed photographs of Brodsky are very rare. Surface quite silvered (though much less notable in person than on scan!) and with some text ghosting from another card, otherwise in very good condition. 3.5 x 5.5 inches (8.5 x 13.6 cm).
