45. Callas, Maria. (1923–1977).
Original 1955 Chicago Bagarozy Photograph

A fine 7 x 9 inch photograph, with the original press clipping attached to verso. Still in costume after performing Madama Butterfly at the Chicago Lyric Opera, Callas is shown shouting at the U.S. Marshall who had served her with court summonses as she walked into the wings after her onstage suicide. She had just walked backstage celebrating her triumph, and as the audience continued to applaud, Maria was approached by Marshal Stanley Pringle, who presented her with a summons to court. The suit was brought by a former manager, Eddie Bagarozy, regarding a 1947 contract that named Bagarozy as Maria's sole representative. Though the two had not been in contact for several years, Bagarozy claimed that he was entitled to a percentage of Maria's fees and the expenses he was supposed to have incurred on her behalf - a total of $300,000. The case was settled out of court on November 7, 1957 and the terms were not made public. Read More...

50. Carter, Elliot. (1908–2012).
Important Signed Letter

Typed letter, signed "Elliott Carter." 1 page, July 11th, 1958. The composer writes to a Mr. Giddy in relation to his sonata for cello and piano. In part: "The work requires a good pianist and needs quite a lot of rehearsal as the ensemble is intricate… If you decide to do the work, please be very sure that the cello is almost always very clearly audible above the piano - even if this means having the piano completely shut and the performer playing very much more softly than is marked. I find that the work depends very much on the proper balance and can be completely spoiled if the piano blots out too much cello." Signed in red ink. Two punch-holes away from the text, and letter folds, otherwise in fine condition.

51. Caruso, Enrico. (1873-1921).
Humorous Signed Postcards

A pair of postcards addressed and written by the great tenor himself and sent to himself at his Milan address from abroad, as was his custom on his many concert tours. One is postmarked Dresden, March 27, 1901. The second is from St. Petersburg, February 18,1900 and includes a hilarious inscription from soprano Elvira Miotti, translated: "Dear Tenor, Remember that water is bad for you and wine makes you love to sing. Ciao, Miotti." Though the inscription is in Miotti's hand, the card is clearly addressed in Caruso's distinctive and humorous hand: "Al Chiarissimo Signor Caruso cav. Enrico / Celeberissimo Tenore / Via Velasca No. 1 Milano (Italia)." Read More...
