Original Sarony of New York cabinet photograph of the English novelist, playwright, and short story writer known for The Woman in White and The Moonstone, considered the first modern English detective novel. Taken ca. 1874 during Collins' tour of the United States and Canada giving readings of his work, when he met American writers including Oliver Wendell Holmes and Mark Twain, and began a friendship with Napoleon Sarony who took several portraits of him. On the original black Sarony mount with elegant red caption, slightly trimmed at the lower edge. Light wear to the edges and one chip to the side of the photograph; otherwise in fine condition. 4.25 x 6.5 inches (10.7 x 16 cm).

[Erotic Art]. Le Cirque: Group of Erotic Engravings
Group of erotic engravings by an unidentified artist, entitled Le Cirque. Undated, possibly ca. 1935. 32 numbered plates (of 45; missing are nos. 2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 17, 19, 21, 25, 35, 39, 45), each postcard size (3 3/4 × 5 inches [9.5 cm × 12.5 cm]), depicting graphically erotic human figures in a series of fantastical postures and acts, with captions that evoke daring feats of the circus, sports, and the boudoir. The identity of the artist remains hidden, while his role as a creator and his relationship "aux amis mon art" (sic) are acknowledged in an introductory text, replete with revelatory language of the circus barker, inviting the viewer to come within. The title plate "LE CIRQUE" includes a miniature engraving (1 1/2 × 1 1/4 inches [37 × 30 mm]) depicting nude female holding aloft a large horizontal phallus to compose the capital letter T, possibly a veiled reference to the artist's name.
