Chaliapin writes to ask Toscanini's permission for an acquaintance, Emilis Melngailis, "an adorer of Mussorgsky, a wonderful musician and also a composer, without any material interest," to visit him in Milan and discuss instrumentation in Boris Godunov.  He adds in a postscript: "Apologies for my Italian!" Pair of original photographs of the superstar Italian tenor, in costume for the 1974 Hamburg production of Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera."  Stamped by the photographer D.J.V.  Friedhelm von Estorft of Hamburg on the verso, with additional Teldec stamps and Decca label affixed to each.  Slight wear at corners, lightly rippled, some spotting, else fine.  9.375 x 7 inches (23.8 x 17.8 cm.)

Paris: Librairie Stock. 1935. 8vo. 244 pp. A fine copy, boldly signed and inscribed on the title page: "A Raymond Bayer, Son ami Serge Lifar. Paris 1938." Spine somewhat worn but covers holding fine and overall in very good condition.

Raymond Bayer (1898 - 1960) was an important French philosopher who wrote influential essays on grace and aesthetics including the "Histoire de l'esthétique" and who founded in 1947 the "Revue d'esthétique."
