A rare 8 x 10 inch photograph by James Kriegsman of the American singer known as "Queen of the Blues," signed and inscribed in blue ink "Fondest regards / to Paul / Dinah Washington." Very fine condition.


Despite her early death, Washington is generally regarded as one of the most influential vocalists of the twentieth century.

"The Path of a Steel Ball" - Original Photograph with the pictured Model Train

Original photograph showing "the path of a steel ball ejected vertically from a moving object," by the important and influential American photographer, together with the original model train used in the photograph, a copy of Berenice Abbott: Documenting Science, in which the photograph is reproduced, and a notarized letter describing the provenance of the model train which belonged to J. Eric Little, a young relative of the MIT physicist Dr. Elbert Little who assisted Abbott with the project. Gelatin silver print photograph signed at the lower right on the photographer's mount, stamped by the photographer on the verso mount. The photograph has been professionally restored, with surface losses inpainted and the gloss immediately around those areas adjusted to more closely resemble the gloss of the original. 19.25 x 9 inches, mount and frame 30 x 24 inches.  Read More...

A 1987 portfolio of prints titled From Rhapsody (A Suite of Three Prints) by contemporary American artist Jennifer Bartlett (California/New York; born 1941), printed by Patricia Branstead and Sally Mara Sturman with assistance by Susan Rees and published by Parasol Press, Ltd., New York (1987). The three loose prints consist of sugarlift, aquatint and spit-bite over a photo-etching of a grid and are printed on BFK paper. The collection includes images Row 21, Plate 42Row 36, Plate 252, and Row 138, plate 955 after the original enamel paintings on steel plates in Bartlett’s seminal work Rhapsody exhibited at the Paula Cooper Gallery, New York in 1976. Pair of signed color candid photographs of the innovative American sculptor, each signed "Sandy Calder" in black ballpoint ink, adding an arrow pointing to himself in one of the images.  He is shown in a red shirt embracing, respectively, Arthur and Anita Kahn. Kodak prints dated June 71 on the verso, both in very fine condition and measuring 7 x 5 inches. Together with a third same format color candid photograph, dated January 72 on the verso, depicting the artist with Arthur Kahn and an unidentified other man in front of one of his large mobiles, the form with which he was most closely associated. Duchamp on the Meaning of Art - An Important Autograph Letter

Autograph letter signed "Marcel Duchamp," dated January 7, 1968 with NY autograph address at the head "28 W. 10 / N.Y.C." answering an inquiry into the meaning of art. In English: "Dear Mr. Massey, If I am right, etymologically the word "art" comes from the Sanskrit and, according to some dictionaries, corresponds to the meaning of 'to do'.  I believe it is 'to do' not 'to make'. That, I hope, will answer your letter of Nov. 8th '67. Sincerely yours."  Black ink on thin paper, with tape stain slightly showing through from verso (tape longer present), verso toned from prior mounting, overall very fine.  5.75 x 7.75 inches (14.7 x 19.7 cm.). An important letter from the artist who famously questioned the creative function of the artist and the meaning of art as a form of making.  Read More...
