A rare document in the history of classical music: the surviving 1811 program of the Napoleon Festival in Erfurt, formerly owned and treasured by Johannes Brahms, and presented by the composer to his friend Edward Speyer on October 3, 1895. The program bears Brahms' inscription and signature in ink along the full height of the left margin: "Herrn Edward Speyer zur frdl. Erinnerung an Meiningen 1895 (auch ein Musik- und ein Napoleon-fest! | Johannes Brahms." (To Mr. Edward Speyer, in friendly remembrance of Meiningen 1895—itself a music and Napoleon festival! Paper, watermark "B", 4 pages, single bifolium, 8.75 x 14.25 inches (22.5 x 36.5 cm) folded. 36. [Brahms, Johannes. (1833–1897)] & Schütte, Agathe. (1835–1909) & Speyer, Edward. (1839–1934).
Portrait, Correspondence, and Death-notice of Agathe Schütte (née von Siebold)

An intriguing collection of rare materials relating to Agathe von Siebold. The daughter of a professor in Göttingen, Agathe was a gifted young singer who entered into a romantic relationship with Brahms in autumn 1858, inspiring the 14 songs and duets by Brahms in that period, as well as the melodic motifs on her name of Opp. 36 and 44 no. 10: A-G-A-B-E (A-G-A-H-E in German notation). When Johannes broke off their brief love affair, Agathe destroyed their letters and gave away his music manuscripts. In 1868 she married a physician, Carl Schütte. 37. Britten, Benjamin. (1913–1976).
Autograph Musical Quotation Signed

A playful AMQS from the influential English composer. On Red House, Aldeburgh "With the compliments of Benjamin Britten" page, 12.5 x 8.5 cm, the composer has penned an unusual quote of the note B with two clefs, making it possible to be read the same way when viewed upside down. Apparently, the composer was making a palindromic musical reference to the B's of his name!  Framed to 24" x 12" with 2 reproduced portraits. In apparently fine condition, not examined out of frame.
