Vintage Carnegie Hall program from a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, with the Festival Casals Orchestra, members of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw, and soloists Haeflinger, Warfield, Forrester, Iglesias, and Berberian, all under the direction of Pablo Casals. The inside blank front cover inscribed in blue ink, likely in the hand of Marta Casals, with the 8-line text of "Choral 21-23: 53 (Psalm 375, Paul Gerhardt 1607–1676)" and signed below by Pablo Casals. She is shown playing and has signed with a long inscription to Midland Symphony conductor Walter Mantani: "To Walter Mantani, Remembering the joy of our music making together and with heartfelt admiration of your vital contribution to our musical life. Carroll Glenn." Together with a backing from an earlier frame, noting that Glenn performed Bruch's Concerto no. 1 on December 9, 1961. Gould, Glenn. (1932–1982). Autograph Letter Signed to the Son of Ferruccio Busoni
An exceedingly rare autograph letter signed from the legendary pianist to Rafaello Busoni, son of composer Ferruccio Busoni, expressing satisfaction at Rafaello's comparison of Gould's style to that of Ferruccio Busoni, and hoping to meet in New York. Toronto, May 27, 1958; 2 pp. Gould writes: "Dear Mr. Busoni, I wish to thank you most sincerely for your wonderful letter. I can assure you that I have never before been so honored and delighted by kind words about my work. It is of the greatest satisfaction that this compliment should take the form of a comparison to the vast artistry and accomplishment of your father. I would like to take the opportunity of telephoning you when I am next in New York, and I hope that I may have the pleasure of meeting you. Again, may I thank you for your letter, which will remain a treasured possession for the rest of my life. Most cordially yours, Glenn Gould." She has signed at the head of the page, with two small clipped portraits of the two performers are mounted below. Their joint program included Beethoven's "Appassionata" sonata and piano works by Brahms, Schubert, and Chopin, alternating with a selection of folk and art songs. It was Ney's first appearance in Boston, and the Music Magazine praised her as "an unusually interesting pianist with original ideas about interpretation." A highly amusing autograph letter signed from the Bohemian cellist and composer remembered for his many cello compositions and his universally-used volume of etudes, the High School of Cello Playing. 4 pp., n.d. Popper writes (translated from the German): "To Marianne Eisler (Violin) - - Dresden. 'During man's lifetime one feels that some letters should have been written—yet one had to!' Please remember these words which, as you may sense immediately, have the right and certain potential to become a classic citation. 'Man cannot escape from immortality.' Please do not pay too much attention to these 'words.' You will not discover their meaning—nor will I! So, please, do not be too concerned. I am still in full control of my weak brainpower which only at the beginning of this letter refused to abdicate its right to exist. So, let's now rather talk about discourse. I am sincerely pleased about the kind reception you received from the Lauterbachs which indicates the best hopes for the studies which are your prime aim at this point. My blessings for tomorrow morning when you are to play for Lautenbach. Spare him Popper; he was always so nice and kind to me! Today I did something very stupid. Somebody asked me where I will travel at the beginning of January. I replied 'Struwestrasse 27.' I mean, for God's sake! Abresch photograph of Rabin with his violin - presumably the 1736 Guarneri renamed ‘the Rabin’ after his death - signed and inscribed to Walter Mantani, conductor of the Midland Odessa Symphony (TX), with whom Rabin performed the Paganini Concerto #1 on December 2, 1961: "To Walter Mantani. A million thanks for your kindness, hospitality and musical collaboration. All best wishes, Michael Rabin / 1961."
