Group of Photographs of Native American Actors

Group of five large original photographs of Native American actors of the 1920's. Included are portraits of Chief Clear Sky (a mirror-image print of another extant photograph), Chief Luxosier (English name Billie Harris), Chief Big Tree (two photographs), and "Morning Sky" of the Mission Players of San Gabriel (also known as Poppy Nistfall, or possibly Anapole Del Vando). Most stamped or signed in the image by the photographer, E. Willard Spurr; each actor identified on the verso, two with credit stamps from the photographer also to the verso. Four trimmed 11 x 14 prints and one larger 14 x 18 print on cream card. Some small stains, edge wear and small tears; overall fine. Read More...

Signed Photograph with Two Further Native American Photographs

Three large exhibition photographs of Native Americans, one signed by the Cheyenne actor Chief Thunder Bird to the photographer, E. Willard Spurr. The photographs depict Thunderbird (dated 1927), Chief Clear Sky, and another Native American actor in a feathered headdress. The photograph of Chief Thunder Bird is signed and inscribed at the lower right: "To E. Willard Spurr, artist. Your friend Thunder Bird, Cheyenne." The photograph of an unidentified man is signed at the foot: "E. Willard Spurr, 'artist.' Pasadena, Calif. 1925." Each photograph stamped by Spurr in the image, with two of them blind-stamped in the lower margin. Two with a small corner loss, partially affecting the inscription; one with a stain at the left. Rafael Rubinstein."  "Richly illustrated album, published on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the famous Kamerni Theatre. "Am I Not a Man and a Brother" - 18th Century Anti-Slavery Token

Anti-Slavery token produced for the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade, established by Granville Sharp and Thomas Clarkson in 1787. It shows the society's emblem of a chained African man, naked and kneeling, "Am I not a Man and a Brother" around the perimeter on obverse, "May Slavery & Oppression Cease Throughout the World" around the perimeter and clasped hands (in print formats generally one is black and one, white) in the center on reverse.  Bronze. Douglas and by the iconoclastic lawyer Thurman Arnold, known for his tenure as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division under President Roosevelt. 8 pp., stapled with front and back cover pages. Autograph note signed in the hand of the legendary psychologist, giving a short psychological analysis of a female patient. On the letterhead of fellow psychologist Dr. Paul Federn, a representative of Freud and the Vice-President of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. Nicely framed behind glass with a photograph of Freud and a translation from German to English, as follows: "Miss Kirschbaum, At the present time: Depressions - fits of fear, not eliminated even with the approach of marriage. 10/21/21  Freud."
