150. [Literature & Art] Day-Lewis, Cecil. (1904–1972) [Effinger, Cecil. (1914–1990)].
Autograph Letter Signed - From the Collection of David Diamond

Autograph letter signed from the Anglo-Irish poet to American composer Cecil Effinger. November 27, [1949]; 2 pp. Day-Lewis writes: "Dear Mr. Effinger, I am most interested to hear that you have done a setting of 'The Christmas Tree.' It is curious that you have mentioned a detection plot in connection with opera, for although none of my own work would be suitable—I feel sure a new plot would be necessary, not a re-hashed one, with a fantastic or mock-heroic approach—a fellow-poet over here, Patric Dickinson, suggested to me only a few months ago that he thought of trying his hand at the libretto of such an opera. You might be interested to get in touch with him: his address is 38 Church Square, Rye, Sussex; he has had two poetic plays performed by the B.B.C. & in the theater, & is no novice at dramatic construction, though I do not know how well versed he may be in musical matters. Yours sincerely, C. Day-Lewis." Together with a half-tone photograph of the author as a young man with a dog. Slight mounting traces; overall fine. Letter 5.25 x 7 inches (13.3 x 17.7 cm); photograph 3.25 x 4.75 inches (8.5 x 12.3 cm). Read More...

In the typed note (September 23, 1963; 2 pp. on blue-bordered letterhead) she writes: "Here am I, dear Elizabeth Arden, with some of that unwelcome commodity—unasked advice. In 1940 I had my gall-bladder out. It wasn't fun. But the later change in my general well-being was miraculous. It doubtless will be the same in your experience (though I always think of you as being equipped with more health and vitality than any other living human being.) In the coming year please don't forget that one mustn't be too smarty after a major goings-on such as this certainly is. Please don't move pianos or even continents. It doesn't pay off, that post-operational year. Take it—as our American saying goes—easy. In eight months of a year you'll be better than new. Well, I said it was unasked advice, didn't I! Edna Ferber." Paperclip mark to the note and to the first few pages; some edge losses to the dustjacket, in mylar; toning; overall fine in very good dust jacket. 6.25 x 9.5 inches (16 x 24.5 cm). 157. [Literature & Art] Pound, Ezra. (1885–1972) [Diamond, David. (1915–2005)].
"I am god damned if I am going to meet any more Americans" - Typed Letter Signed to DAVID DIAMOND

Typed letter signed from the important poet to composer David Diamond, refusing to meet with him and denouncing in strident terms the work of the Guggenheim Foundation. N.d. [April 1938], 1 p. Pound writes: "Dear Mr Diamond, I doubt very much if any man who has been passed by Erskine and the Guggenheim committee can do anything that wd/ interest me. At any rate there are only about 200 dollars avialable [sic] for work of men NOT subsidized by [Guggenheim Foundation staff] Moe and Aydelotte. And as these scavangers [sic] have always opposed any efforts of mine and the work of any and every good artist whom I have recommended to them BEFORE said artists were very well and widely known I don't honestly think I can be bothered with any of their favorite composers. Put it this way: Until some, any, American institution spend a little money on something I believe in I am god damned if I am going to meet any more Americans. Yrs all too frankly, [Ezra Pound.]" The letter has been damaged by fire at the head and foot, leaving only part of the signature visible; this occurred in a house fire when David Diamond's possessions were being stored at the home of Willem de Kooning. Overall soiling and toning from the fire; holograph corrections; legible and overall good. Approx. 9 x 10.5 inches (22.7 x 26.5 cm). Read More...
