87. [Instrumentalists] Lalo, Edouard. (1823–1892) [Sarasate, Pablo de. (1844–1908)].
Autograph Letter Signed to Pablo de Sarasate

Interesting autograph letter signed from the the French composer and violinist to fellow violinist Pablo de Sarasate, shedding light on their friendship and mentioning Parisian gossip and Sarasate's failed tour of Hungary. March 28, 1877. Lalo genially rebukes Sarasate for thinking he had not replied to his letter, suggesting that the piano manufacturer Bosendorfer, who Sarasate had asked to forward his letters, had not been doing so; he then reassures Sarasate that he was not offended to be addressed as "tu" and that he would be glad to have a closer friendship with the other man. Going on, he reports news from the music publisher Durand, that Sarasate had been conned on a recent tour of Hungary, and offers to stop the gossip about this in whatever way Sarasate likes. 4 pp. on a bifolium; folding creases, area of water damage to the first and second pages; very legible and overall very good. 4.5 x 7 inches (11.4 x 18 cm). 88. [Instrumentalists] [Liszt, Franz. (1811–1886)] Held, Louis. (1851–1927).
Four Original Photographs of Liszt and his Students

Four remarkable large original Louis Held group photographs of Liszt and his students, taken ca. 1880's at Liszt's Hofgärtnerei residence in Weimar. Two of the photographs show a group of Liszt's young male students striking comical poses in an outdoor location; in the first, seven men are present, and in the second, four more have joined them. We have identified among them Bernhard Stavenhagen (wearing a bowler hat at the upper right in the first photograph, and lounging with his hat taken off at the left of the middle row in the second) and Alexander Siloti (reclining on Stavenhagen's knee in the first photograph and sprawled with one hand raised in the second). The other two photographs show a larger group of men and women on the same occasion, one with Liszt visible looking out of the house window, and one with him seated in the front with his students at his feet, and close to 100 men and women grouped around. All stamped by Louis Held on the verso. Some light edge wear and small corner losses; rather buckled; overall very good. 10 x 8 inches (27.5 x 21.5 cm). Read More...

An interesting collection of autograph and typed letters signed to Bach scholar Gerhard Herz from violinist Alexander Schneider ("Sascha"), pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski ("Miecio"), and several other correspondents, as well as copies of outgoing correspondence. Most of the letters in the group relate to the planning of a March 1958 recital by Schneider and Horszowski at the University of Louisville, where Herz was a longtime professor and beloved figure; in the correspondence, his friendship with both artists comes through in their humorous tone as they negotiate the terms of the performance and the repertoire, with Herz attempting to convince Schneider to perform the notoriously difficult Schubert Fantasy (which Schneider eventually refuses.) Also included are a 1952 autograph letter signed from Horszowski, concerning the program of another concert; two much later autograph letters signed from Schneider and Horszowski (1979 and 1981), reconnecting the friends after many years; and several other pieces of correspondence related to Herz's work on Bach. Letters in fine condition overall. Read More...
