Typed letter signed from the French composer of Polish birth who was also a celebrated concert pianist, giving a reference for American pianist Raymond Lewenthal. January 2, 1946; 1 p. Tansman writes: "I had the opportunity to hear Mr. Raymond Leventhal play, and I was most impressed by his genuine talent and ability. His performances of music of different periods showed an excellent technical equipment, real musicality and perfect feeling of style. He has in my opinion a very brilliant pianistic future and deserves any possible encouragement. Alexandre Tansman." Rather wrinkled and toned with a loss at the upper right; overall very good. Group of Letters to Raymond Lewenthal

A remarkable group of 18 autograph and typed letters signed from the American virtuoso pianist Shura Cherkassky and his mother, pianist and teacher Lydia Cherkassky, to fellow pianist Raymond Lewenthal. 12 of the letters and postcards date from 1957–1958, a period during which Lewenthal was studying with Alfred Cortot in Siena and beginning to perform in London. Cherkassky, as an older and well-established pianist, and his mother Lydia, who had been Lewenthal's teacher, offer him a generous degree of support and encouragement, and also report on Cherkassky's own touring and performances. The 6 further letters and postcards date from 1969 to 1973, and find the two pianists having fallen largely out of touch, but hoping to be reunited. Complete details of the letters are listed below. 1958 Carnegie Hall program from a performance of the brilliant young pianist, just one month after his win at the first International Tchaikovsky Competition. With the Symphony of the Air under Kiril P. Kondrashin, the concert included Cliburn's winning pieces from Moscow: Tchaikovsky's Concerto no. 1 and Rachmaninoff's Concerto no. 3. 19 pp. Fine. 7.25 x 9.75 inches (18.5 x 24.8 cm).

Typed letter signed from the Russian-born American pianist and pedagogue, to American pianist Raymond Lewenthal. 1 p.; n.d., together with envelope postmarked August 20, 1981. Dorfmann writes: "Dear Raymond: I was deeply touched by your thoughtful letter. I always value your judgment and appreciate it greatly, that I think you know. The delay in answering your letter was due to my recent illness. I was in the hospital with pneumonia, now I am fine. You judged so rightly my student. Talent he has but he needs more work. I called his home in Canada, he was away but I spoke with his mother. She was over joyed with your judgment. I thank you with all my heart. Hope to see you in New York soon. Affectionately, Ania."Together with a copy of Lewenthal's letter to Dorfmann, which concerns a pupil of Dorfmann's whom Lewenthal heard perform in a competition in Quebec. Striking 1943 press photograph of the spectacular Russian pianist entertaining the troops at a Red Army airfield. Press caption to the verso reads: "Emile Gilals [sic] one of Russia's top-ranking pianist, gives a recital on a Red Army airfield near the front. This field is a fighter plane station where the men stand by their planes ready to go aloft. At a moment's notice, planes are kept warmed up in background.
