"The Music for the Times" - Harper's Weekly Cartoons from the Civil War

One page from the May 4, 1861 issue of Harper's Weekly, with an ensemble of cartoons joking about music and and the military. Captioned "The Music for the Times" (one month after the outbreak of the Civil War), the drawings show "a Verdi stockade," "Musical artillery firing a 40 crochetter," "The Maestro conducting a siege in person," "Grand charge of Tromboners," "Orchestral lancers a la Verdi," and an "Organ-ized guard of grinders."  On the lower half of the page, another cartoon reacts to the popularity of Wilkie Collins' 1859 novel The Woman in White. Very fine. 11 x 16 inches (28.3 x 40.5 cm).

Four Engravings of Musical Professions with German Poems

A very interesting set of four engravings by the important publisher and art dealer Christoph Weigel the Elder, depicting an organ builder, a string maker, a musician, and an instrumentalist at their work, each accompanied by a short poem in German explaining how the work of each is to the glory of God. Taken from Weigel's 1698 volume Abbildung der gemein-nützlichen Haupt-Stände: von denen Regenten u. ihren so in Friedens- als Kriegs-Zeiten zugeordneten Bedienten an biss auf alle Künstler u. "La Musique" Medal

Medal by Adolphe Rivet, showing the figure of "La Musique" on the recto, a woman holding a lyre; and with the words "Brigonnet / La Chorale Albigny-Neuville / Gratitude-Amitié / à son Président 26-1-1936." engraved in a space on the verso, surrounded by the figure of an angel. The medal was presented to a choir director in the town of Albigny, near Lyon. 2 5/8 inches (6.8 cm). Fine.

18th Century Drawing of Woman with Sheet Music

Ca. 1700 pencil drawing on paper showing a woman holding a piece of sheet music, intended as a preliminary study for a larger work. A grid for proportional magnification or transfer of the subject is superimposed on the drawing. Paper with fleur de lys watermark; collector's stamp Bernhard Funck (Lugt no. 3835) and Walter Schrott (Lugt no. 2383) to the verso. Some light scattered foxing, corner marks at the upper edge; lower left corner restored. Overall very good. 7 x 9.5 inches (17.8 x 24.2 cm), tipped to a larger hinged window mount in fine condition.

Attractive framed ensemble of a circular vignette of a fragment sheet music (a continuo song in English), displayed between two later engravings of a man playing a hunting horn and a woman playing a vielle. Matted in yellow fabric and framed in a decorative frame to an overall size of 7 x 18 inches. The pieces included are likely not original printings but rather later reproductions assembled for decorative purposes. In very good condition, with some edge/corner wear, top of the spine slightly torn and cover facing page with the remnants of a price.

Striking vintage flyer for the newly created 1937-1938 season of "Pops" concerts at the Wigmore Hall, London. These Monday afternoon concerts, with tickets at only 2 shillings and sixpence, each had a program of "only... two major works," which included such crowd-pleasers as Haydn's Seven Last Words and Berg's Suite Lyrique! The complete repertoire of the season is printed on the verso. Light toning; overall fine. 11 x 8.5 inches (28.2 x 22 cm).

Highly amusing signed photograph from the important composer, who has penned a playful inscription across the image: "Vile, arcivile, arcivescovile / Sei (anche siete) Schifo! / G. Puccini / 1921." Translated from the Italian, these are increasingly emphatic expressions of how vile or despicable either Puccini or the addressee of the photograph is: "Vile, arch-vile, most vile / You are (and you all are) disgusting!" Photographed by Erminia of Milan, on the photographer's rigid mount. Some light soiling, irregular silvering to the head of the image; pencil notes on the verso.
