Signed Letter, Sending Birthday Wishes

Signed note from the great Polish pianist, composer and statesman who was prime minister and foreign minister of the Polish Republic. [Estoril, Portugal], October 13, 1940. 1 p. Paderewski sends greetings on the 40th birthday of his private secretary, Ignacy Kollupajlo. The note is signed by the pianist, his sister Antonina Wilkonska Paderewska, secretary Sylwin Strakacz, his wife Aniela Strakacz (who later wrote a memoir about Paderewski), and Anetka Strakacz. Toning and a slight smudge to Paderewski's signature; overall fine. 5.5 x 8.5 inches (13.9 x 21.5 cm). Together with the transmissal envelope, a typed translation, two visiting cards (one with Kollupailo's name and title as Paderewski's secretary; one with the names Ignace G. LaGrange and Guy de Kollupailo), and a clipped obituary for Kollupailo, who died in Dallas, TX.

Translated from the Polish: "Dear Sir, I write to you by order of Ms. Aniela Mieczyslawska, who thinks that you may help me in some matter. I am working on the material for my biography of Paderewski, which will be published in English in London, and in this regard I would like to go on the track of Ms. Aniela Strakaczowny and Mrs. Liibke, who formerly lived with her, if she still lives. From this side of the Atlantic nobody knows what happened to these ladies. I would be very grateful if you could provide me with any information on this subject if possible. Yours, Adam Zamoyski." Caprice op. 18, no. 3, arr. Primrose - Autograph Musical Manuscript

Autograph musical manuscript from the leading violist of his time, a member of the London String Quartet and the NBC Symphony under Toscanini who later embarked on an unprecedented successful solo career as violist. Here he has arranged Wieniawski's Caprice, op. 18, no. 3, originally for two violins, for viola and piano, transposing the work down by a fifth and adding a sparse, mostly chordal accompaniment. Viola part penned in a very small and precise hand, with piano part in a larger hand below. Small additions and changes have been made throughout to the piano part in pencil, including dynamics, tempo markings, articulations, and note changes. Signed on the cover. 5 pp. on 3 sheets of manuscript paper, which have been taped together into a makeshift binding. Corner creases, with some further tape repairs to the corners, showing evidence of performance use, a few small edge tears and light toning. Overall in very good condition. 9.5 x 12 inches (23.8 x 30.4 cm).  Autograph manuscripts from the celebrated violist are of the utmost rarity. Read More...

Signed promotional flyer from the fine English pianist Solomon Cutner, who performed under the single name "Solomon." The flyer advertises his recital on January 8, 1955 at Hunter College of New York, and is sold together with a program and a newspaper clipping from the concert, which included works by Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and Schumann. The program listing is printed opposite the program for an earlier concert of soprano Irmgard Seefried.
