Liège: Aug. Benard. 1891. First edition. 8vo. 166 [11] pp. Marble boards, three-quarter red leather, gilt-stamped spine with 5 raised bands. A remarkable copy, inscribed and signed on the front enpages by Belgian violin virtuoso, Martin Pierre Marsick (1847 - 1924); the son of the composer - Maximilen Vieuxtemps; and by one unidenfied signer. The inscription is neatly penned beneath a small affixed original photograph of Vieuxtemps. In full: "Souvenir de reconnaissance a Monsieur P. Taffanel pour sa participation au festival donne le 2 Mai 1897 au conservatoire de Paris au profit du monument H. Vieuxtemps." Board edges lightly chipped, joints weak, overall fine condition. A beautiful original 8 X 10 inch glossy photograph, in very fine condition and boldly signed by the celebrated Yugoslav-Hungarian violinist. A pupil of Jeno Hubay in Budapest, the great pedagogue said that "young Virovai plays so beautifully as to astonish even me." (Time Magazine, 11/14/38) Virovai signed the present photograph in 1940, two years after his U.S. debut with the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on November 3, 1938.

Expertly repaired and restored with japan paper, with minor losses not affecting relevant text. Exceedingly rare, we have traced only one library-copy worldwide (Leipziger Universitätsbibliothek) and have found only one similar copy (of the later 1853 warrant) at auction in the past 20 years. Mainz: B. Schott's Sohne. [1868]. Full orchestral score. [i],4, 570pp. Lithographed throughout. [PN] 18469. Personen and dedication page [to King Ludwig II] both present. A fine early issue of this enormous conductor's score, with the number 409 stamped at the head of the Personen page. In very fine condition throughout and bound in a striking and unique period presentation binding: Full stamped vellum, all 8 corners with ornate brass plates (the bottom plates having feet for resting on a table!), elaborate seal (13 x 13 cm) in bronze and inlaid enamel affixed to front cover and portraying a female figure with crown, wings, clawed feet and tail, seal and all corners decorated additionally with large inlaid white and coral stone/crystal.

Original 1877 London "Wagner Festival" Program

A remarkable original program from the third of Wagner's 1877 London concerts at Royal Albert Hall. The composer conducted excerpts from both Tannhäuser and Die Walküre, with an orchestra led by Wilhelmj which had been prepared by Richter and Dannreuther. Program has been fixed to a larger page, together with an original photograph of the Royal Albert Hall and a CDV portrait of the composer, a contemporary newspaper review, and an original ticket for this historic event. Program (8.25 x 10.5")has one horizontal crease, is moderately toned, but otherwise in very fine condition.

Important Correspondence regarding Hamburg performances of 1873

An important series of letters concerning Richard Wagner's Hamburg concerts of January 21 and 23, 1873, primarily from Adolf Müller, but also including letters from Eugen Richter, Fritz Schubert, Zacharias, as well an autograph envelope in the hand of Wagner, and a series of original telegrams from Wagner. The Austrian composer and conductor, Adolf Müller was conductor in Hamburg before returning to Vienna to fill his famous father's positions as Kapellmeister and Hauskomponist at the Theater an der Wien. He is now mostly remembered for his operetta “Wiener Blut,” based on his arrangements of dances by Johann Strauss. Vanity Fair Portrait Print, "The Music of the Future."

A fine chromo-lithograph caricature of Wagner published in the English weekly magazine Vanity Fair on May 19, 1877. The composer is shown poised on a chair and conducting. The portrait is by Sir Leslie Ward, known as "Spy," the most famous of the outstanding caricaturists who published in the magazine. In excellent condition, 15 x 10.5 inches.

Signed LP Recording, "Brass and the Blues."

A rare signed recording from the esteemed and influential blues musician. One of his earliest tunes, “Rollin’ Stone,” became the name of the super-successful British rock group and later a periodical ("Rolling Stone") which ranked him as one of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” in 2004.

Chess LP 1507, 1966. The cover is in very good condition with 2" of wear along top center seam. The vinyl is very clean.

Rare Signed West Side Story Sheet Music, "Tonight."

New York: Schirmer & Chappell. Rare signed sheet music from the charming film star who played Maria in the 1961 film of West Side Story. Together with a superb original black and white still from the film.

Though originally signed to do her own singing in the film, Wood's sung numbers were later dubbed over by session singer Marni Nixon. Wood died tragically young when she mysteriously drowned in 1981 after trying to recover a dinghy.

She began appearing in films at the age of five and by the age of 25, was already a three-time Oscar nominee for "Rebel Without a Cause," "Splendor in the Grass," and "Love With the Proper Stranger." She went on to star as Maria in the 1961 film of West Side Story and though originally signed to do her own singing in the film, Wood's sung numbers were later dubbed over by session singer Marni Nixon. Wood died tragically young when she mysteriously drowned in 1981 after trying to recover a dinghy. Signed childhood photographs of Wood are very uncommon. 10.5 X 14 cm.

AMQS from Andrea Chenier, Program and Photograph

A fine grouping from the celebrated Italian tenor, who founded the Arena di Verona summer festival performances with his wife, contralto Maria Gay. Included are: a large autograph musical quotation from Andrea Chenier, inscribed and dated Philadelphia 1928; a 1911 Boston Opera House performance cast list from a performance of Aida; a Mishkin postcard photograph of Zenatello as Otello, his most celebrated role. All in fine condition, nicely matted together to 32.5 X 41.5 cm (or can be easily removed from mat).
