A very fine original early portrait of the Austrian conductor and composer, second son of Johann Strauss 1, great contributor to the waltz-polka genre who was sometimes known as the "Schubert of the ballroom." Without photographer's imprint, some minor marks in the plate, overall in very fine condition. 6.5 X 10.5 cm. Scarce.

Autograph Letter to the Director the Bonn Gesangverein

1 page, addressed to Professor Hugo Grüters, Director of the city Gesangverein in Bonn. January, 1909. Strauss regretfully declines a request for scores of some of his lieder: "Wiegenlied and Muttertändelei are actually manuscripts and as such are the private property of my wife," and he has already refused to send the scores to many other singers. An interesting letter, with usual folds and in very fine condition.

Autograph Letter

A superb and rare letter from the great Italian baritone, creator of numerous Bellini and Donizetti roles. One page, integral address leaf attached. Dated 16 May, 1833. From London, addressed to Carlo Severini, director of the Theatre-Italien. An interesting letter, asking his friend to retrieve some documents on his behalf. He shares the news that his wife has given birth to a baby boy who he is already teaching some musical notes - but "not enough to make an octave" and closes by sending "warm regards from us to dear Rossini." A spectacular original portrait caricature of the great Italian baritone, creator of numerous Bellini and Donizetti roles. Published by Le Charivari in the Chanteurs series of its celebrated "Panthéon Charivarique," c. 1840. Engraved by Aubert & Cie.. Horizontal crease, overall very good. 24 X 32 cm. An original Theatre Royal Dublin concert broadside, featuring an incredible lineup of singers including both Ernesta and Giulia Grisi and Antonio Tamburini, under the baton of Julius Benedict. The broadside advertises a set of three performances which boggle the mind! On Thursday, a performance of Rossini's "Semiramide," was to be followed by a concert of selections from other works by Rossini, Meyerbeer, Rode, Benedict, Gnecco and Donizetti! On Friday, the audience would be offered not only "Anna Bolena," but also "Il Barbiere di Siviglia." On Saturday, the series would culminate in "A Variety of Operatic Entertainments for the Benefit of Madame Grisi." In very fine condition, on fully-backed thin tissue paper. Autograph Music Manuscript, "Elegy."

A very fine and uncommon original manuscript from the French composer of Polish birth who was also a celebrated concert pianist. "Elegy," scored for 2 violin parts, 2 viola parts, and 2 cello parts. Complete in 23 measures on three large systems, inscribed at the head: "To my very dear friends the Brodesky ensemble...with my very deep affection and gratitude from Alexander Tansman. Brussels, Jan. 1947." Beneath the final system at the foot of the page, the composer has written: "I hope it doesn't sound too badly! It was written between two rehearsals!" On thin manuscript paper, edges somewhat rough, and with small tears along right margin and bottom corner and head, only slightly affecting inscription at one point. 28 X 38 cm. Read More...
