Signed Pre-Broadway "Wonderful Town" Program

A very scarce original program from the original production pre-Broadway Boston tryout run of the musical comedy which officially opened at the Winter Garden theater on February 25, 1953 and ran for 559 performances. Rosalind Russell and Edie Adams starred. The present program is for the week of January 26, 1953. 11 pages, covers taped at join, otherwise in fine condition. Boldly signed in red ink on the title-page.

24. Bori, Lucrezia. (1887–1960).
Signed 1935 Metropolitan Opera Program, her last "Pelleas."

Bori has signed and inscribed the 3/20/35 program "hoping will not be the last." In fact, it was Bori's last performance of a work which was closely associated with the great soprano, a role she sang 32 times at the Met. Bori retired the following year with a spectacular Met farewell gala on March 29, 1936.

25. Britten, Benjamin. (1913–1976).
"Billy Budd," 1951 Premiere Program

Original oversize program from the first performance of "Billy Budd," at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on December 1st, 1951. The opera, conducted by the composer, was here presented in it's original four acts, though Britten later compressed it into two in 1960. Theodore Uppman sang the title role, with a cast that also included Peter Pears (Captain Vere) and Geraint Evans (Mr. Flint), who had originally planned to sing Billy Budd, but who withdrew because the role lay too high for his voice. 21.5 X 28.5 cm. Stiff paper, lightly toned, overall fine.

28. Bruneau, Alfred. (1857 - 1934).
Photograph with Autograph Musical Quotation

A very fine postcard portrait, signed and inscribed with an AMQS by the important French critic and composer of operas noted for their realism ("Kerim," " Messidor," " Angelo," etc.), ballets, symphonies and more. The present AMQS is from his 1893 "L'attaque du moulin," an opera based - like many of Bruneau's works - on a story or libretto by his close friend, Émile Zola. Bruneau has penned a 3 measure quote and identification, inscribing it to the author and journalist, Georgette Dreyfus. 8.5 X 13.5 cm, in fine condition.

Autograph Musical Quotation

A remarkable and unusual signed musical quotation from the innovative and influential American composer. Probably from Cage's “Variations I," which the composer described as "a highly indeterminate piece" where "the straight lines are the various parameters of sound and the points are sounds." In blue ink, on a card measuring 11 X 14 cms. One tiny stain, crease along bottom margin, overall very fine.

Autograph Letter and Photograph Ensemble

A friendly autograph letter signed. "Many thanks dear Ruthina for your nice bouttoniere. Hope soon enjoy, with your company, the pasta e fassule..." Single sheet 4to, written in a bold hand in English on "Hotel Knickerbocker" letterhead stationary, matted with a rare composite photograph of Caruso in various operatic roles. Letter measures 20 X 26 cm, photograph measures 17 X 23 cm , both have been elegantly matted and framed to 42 X 53 cm overall. Ready for display.

A superb signed original self-portrait drawing by the great Russian basso, who was - like Caruso - greatly celebrated for his caricature portraits. In pencil, signed and dated 1927 in his hand, one horizontal crease, otherwise in very fine condition. Approx. 13 X 17, nicely double-matted and set in a gold wood frame to 27 X 30.5 cm overall.

A nice signed letter from the Italian composer, in his capacity as Director of the Paris Conservatory. The printed letter with holograph additions is addressed to a Monsieur Dauverné, and informs him of the time and location for his participation in the exams for Solfege and wind instruments. 1 page, 8vo. 14 July, 1841.
