Alexanian, Diran. (1881-1954). (Click on image for full-size version)
Winter-Spring 2008 Catalogue, Lot 3.
The Technique of Violoncello Playing compiled in complete accord with Pablo Casals. English version by Frederick Fairbanks. Parallel French and English text.
Paris: Editions Salabert. Collection A.Z. Mathot, 1922. First edition. Folio. 215 pages. Spine somewhat worn, else a very fine and crisp copy of this important treatise on cello playing.

"He studied with Grützmacher and while a student played chamber music with Brahms and Joachim. At the age of 17 he appeared as the soloist in Strauss's Don Quixote with the composer conducting and scored a triumph; he was then invited to play concertos with Nikisch and Mahler. In 1901 he settled in Paris, where Casals saw some of his fingerings and recognized that Alexanian shared his own, then revolutionary, ideas on technique and interpretation. Many years' collaboration followed, leading to the publication in 1922 of their joint treatise Traité théorique et pratique du violoncelle and in 1929 of Alexanian's analytical edition of the solo cello suites of Bach. Alexanian was professor of the Casals class at the Ecole Normale de Musique from 1921 to 1937, when he left for the USA. His classes in Paris, Baltimore and New York attracted artists and students from all over the world, and his influence extended far beyond his own pupils (among them Maurice Eisenberg and Antonio Janigro) to such cellists as Feuermann, Cassadó, Piatigorsky and Fournier. He was also a conductor of distinction." (Grove) $150.00

Winter-Spring 2008 Catalogue, Lot 5.
Rare Autograph Letter, mentioning "La Favorite."
Interesting letter from 1862, regarding the Opera. In full (translated from the French): "Dear Monsieur, Will I be luckier this evening than for the "Favorite" and could you give me a box? As I leave Paris Monday morning it is the last occasion I shall have to go to the Opera - may I persuade you that I not miss it. If the house in more difficult could you not give me your box on stage? I would prefer that to any other. I shake your hand cordially. Desiree Artot."

On Meyerbeer's recommendation, she starred at the Paris Opera and appeared regularly in Italy, Germany, and England. She rejected him and - with tragic consequences - he married another, later saying that Artot was the only woman he ever wanted to marry. Spring 2007 Catalogue, Lot 5.
From the collection of pianist Paul Wittgenstein, with his extensive markings.
Book Description: Durand and Co., Paris 1919, with additional Peters parts. In the first 23 pages of the Durand piano score, Wittgenstein has made extensive pencil conversions to Left Hand Only. Many are made by combining the staffs and rewriting some notes. The accompanying Violin part has pencil corrections and notes in his hand and there's a note in one corner of the piano book "Turn violin page" (German), indicating that he was using some of the violin sections at the same time. Included are separate volumes for Violon I & II (both with pencil notes & corrections), Flute I & II. In the Peters score, Wittgenstein has made similar extensive Left Hand Only conversions through the first 24 pages. Included are two Violino II volumes and one Violino I volume. Paul Wittgenstein (1887 – 1961) studied with Leschetizky and lost his right arm during the Worl War I. His amazing virtuosity, however, enabled to pursue a major concert career, in which he devoted himself to playing with the left-hand only. Many composers wrote major works forhim, including Strauss, Ravel, Britten, Hindemith, and Prokofiev. These heavily annotated scores provide a unique insight into one of the most inspirational achievements in performance history. $500
