Original 1947 Photograph - Signed by the Photographer

Original William Gottlieb black and white photograph of the important American jazz composer, bandleader and pianist, circa 1946-48; printed circa 1979. Gottlieb, who has signed his name and added a copyright symbol to the lower left, captures Ellington mid-laugh in the reflection of his dressing room mirror.  Gelatin silver print, printed later.  Photographer stamp to verso, titled and signed additionally on verso in ink and also, in pencil, to lower mat.  Mounting remnants to verso corners, a few dings to corners and to lower right margin edge, else fine. Sight: 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35.5 cm.), matted to 16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm.).

"Gottlieb was not taking pictures; he was photographing music.  Again and again, he catches the precise moment when the musician's face is suffused with effort and emotion and beauty: the music is there." - Whitney Balliett (22968)
