The picture captures 43 consecutive years of music directorship at the Boston Symphony. Monteux held the position from 1919 to 1924, Koussevitzky from 1924 to 1949, and Munch from 1949 to 1962. All three were immigrants from Europe—Monteux from France, Koussevitzky from Russia, and Munch from France (originally from Alsace, then under German rule). (22355)
