A series of appearances with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in January of 1952 made such an impression that William Steinberg was engaged as Music Director, a position he held until 1976.  He also served as principal guest conductor for the New York Philharmonic from 1966 to 1968, and director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1969 to 1972.
