Symphony no. 2 - Autograph Musical Quotation

Autograph musical quotation from the important conductor particularly known for his connection with Gustav Mahler, and who has penned five measures from the opening of the composer's Symphony no. 2. Walter identifies the work, signs and dates Munich, July 1919. On a small sheet with some toning and water damage to the upper edge, not affecting the text; mounted on a stiff white sheet. 5.25 x 5 inches (13.5 x 11.5 cm) and presented with a fine original photograph (approx. 8 x 10 inches) of Walter conducting. Nicely matted and framed to 21.5 x 17.5 inches. 

Walter first met Mahler at the Hamburg Opera, where he held his first position as a chorus director. He became closely associated with Mahler and from 1901 on, worked as his assistant at the Vienna Hofoper. He conducted the premiere of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in 1911, and the premiere of the Symphony no. 9 in 1912, after Mahler's death. Walter also published a piano-four-hands arrangement of Mahler's Symphony no. 2 ca. 1901, a few years after its publication for orchestra. (15858)
